Bio4PURConti begins: building a continuous bio-based route to aniline

Bio4PURConti started on 1 June 2026. Over the next 42 months, 10 partners from 7 countries will work on a continuous bio-based process for aniline, a chemical the polyurethane industry relies on and which today comes almost entirely from fossil oil.

Coordinated by Covestro, the consortium will develop the production strains, the continuous fermentation and the analytics behind the process, then demonstrate it at a semi-industrial scale of 1.5 cubic metres. A Safe and Sustainable by Design assessment runs throughout, comparing the new route against fossil aniline.

The project is funded by the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking under Horizon Europe.
